A Kenyan housemaid ready for domestic work in a family home

The housemaid role

A housemaid is responsible for keeping a family home clean, orderly and running smoothly day to day. All the housemaid jobs we recruit for are full live-in: the housemaid lives in the employer’s home, with accommodation and food provided. Housemaids are also called maids, housekeepers or domestic helpers.

The exact duties depend on the size of the home and the household’s needs, and are set out in the employment contract before the housemaid travels.

Typical housemaid duties

  • Cleaning and tidying rooms, bathrooms and living areas
  • Laundry, ironing and folding clothes
  • Organising wardrobes, cupboards and household items
  • Kitchen cleaning and washing dishes
  • Helping with cooking or meal preparation, where the employer requires it and the housemaid has experience
  • Other general domestic duties agreed in the contract
